From Backyard Flower Farm to Luxury Wedding Florist: The Story of BLOOM Floral Design

In 2008, on a dark Northern Michigan February night, a simple idea took root while the Earth lay still: grow flowers to share, to sell, to… bloom.

What started as a dream has grown into one of the floral industry’s most trusted full-service wedding floral design studios. This is the story of BLOOM — a garden-grown beginning that shaped the way we design today.

Humble Beginnings: A Flower Farm and a Dream

In 2002, we purchased a broken-down old farmhouse with a perfectly imperfect garden plot tucked behind it. It wasn’t much to speak of — but it felt right.

We wanted our daughter to understand where food comes from. We wanted her to see her parents build something with their hands. We wanted space to grow — in every sense of the word.

We raised chickens.

We planted vegetables.

We planted flowers.

We watched apple trees bloom in Spring and made applesauce in the Fall.

That tiny garden slowly became a tiny flower farm.

It was honest work. Hard work. A true labor of love built with blood, sweat, and a dream in what could become.

From Kitchen Table to Wedding Studio

We rebuilt our century-old home ourselves. Slow. Steady. Confident we were doing the right thing.

We outgrew the kitchen table and built our first small studio in the back.

On Saturdays, we sold flowers in a tiny courtyard in our sweet small town. We said yes to the couples who understood what we were creating — seasonal, garden-inspired floral design rooted in authenticity and simply to make people smile.

Then we designed our first weddings.

And then a few more.

Since then, we've lost count. Since then, we continue to be grateful in more ways than we can count.

Our earliest customers — the ones who bought armfuls of flowers from our garden — still walk through our flower shop doors today.

Growing Into a Full-Service Wedding Florist

As the years unfolded, we grew:

We grew our designs.

We grew our team.

We grew our daughter.

We grew a business built on intention and artistry.

Today, BLOOM is known for:

But at the heart of it, we are creators.

Our beginnings in the garden shaped the way we design — with movement, seasonality, and soul.

Looking back, we are humbled by our authentic beginnings.

This was a dream entirely our own — but we never built it alone.

It truly takes a village.
